Why AccuScreen™?

Diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions globally. One in thirteen people in Canada have diabetes. About half of these people will not know that they have diabetes. One in thirteen people in Canada have pre-diabetes (impaired glucose tolerance). Although there is no cure for diabetes, early identification and appropriate intervention can mitigate the associated complications and optimize the health of the individual. Interventions might include changes in diet, lifestyle, education, medication, and monitoring.

“AccuScreen™ allows you to detect those in the pre-diabetic state which people manifest for five to 10 years before full-blown diabetes," states Redmond.

The World Health Organization estimates that there will be approximately 370 million people with
diabetes by 2030.

What is AccuScreen™?

AccuScreen™ is a new screening tool that provides fast, effective identification of Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes. AccuScreen™ consists of calibrated wafers made from a proprietary formulation of proteins, fats, and complex carbohydrates that are consumed after an overnight fast.

“At least 50% of the current diabetics have not been diagnosed and therefore are not receiving treatment.”

~The World Health Organization

How does AccuScreen™ work?

The individual follows these steps:
Step 1: Fast overnight
Step 2: Take a small blood sample (finger prick) and test the sample with a portable blood glucose meter (glucometer)
Step 3: Consume 10 calibrated AccuScreen™ wafers with a large glass of water in 10 minute
Step 4: Wait 45 minutes and take another finger prick blood sample and test the sample with a glucometer

The blood glucose response identifies whether that individual is non-diabetic, pre-diabetic or diabetic.

Advantages of AccuScreen™

AccuScreen™ is able to identify diabetes at an early stage or pre-diabetes. Why is this important? Because early detection means earlier intervention (modification of lifestyle, diet, and/or medication) to better manage, prevent, or delay diabetes, and mitigate the effects of diabetes and associated complications.

  • Cost effective, quick and easy to use
  • Convenient – can be used at home or in the clinic
  • Compatible with standard blood glucose meters (glucometers)
  • Provides a screening tool with on-the-spot results
  • Provides standard to monitor effects of intervention
  • Determines whether non diabetic, pre-diabetic (IGT), or diabetic
  • More than 85% accurate – higher than any other system available
  • Identifies people in the critical “pre-diabetic” stage
  • No risk of diabetic shock – can be consumed by diabetics
  • Palatable with little or no nausea
  • No special storage conditions required; shelf-life over 2 years
  • Applicable for use to determine dosage of diabetic oral therapy

Market Assessments of AccuScreen™

The original concept for a diabetes test meal was developed by Dr. Thomas Wolever, a world-renowned researcher in the field of glycemic indexing, from the University of Toronto and colleagues. In 1996, Ceapro acquired this technology. Since then the product has been reformulated and further clinical trials conducted.

AccuScreen™ has been stringently tested in multi-centre clinical trials across Canada. In comparison with currently used diabetes diagnostic tests, AccuScreen™ identified diabetes and pre-diabetes more accurately and reproducibly. In addition, AccuScreen™ is pleasant to eat.

“Clinical trials have shown that AccuScreen™ is the most consistent and accurate diabetes screening tool available. It provides an on-the-spot indication of elevated blood glucose levels. We would then recommend that the individual follow-up with their family doctor for diagnosis, treatment, and education.”

~ Dr. Mark Redmond, President, Ceapro Inc.

During the next year, various sectors throughout Alberta will be field-testing the AccuScreen™ product. The sites include:
  • Kanai Nation Blood Tribe - Southern Alberta (the largest First Nations reserve in North America)
  • Capital Health Region– Edmonton
  • Northern Lights Regional Health Authority - Fort McMurray
  • A selection of Edmonton-based corporations

Quick Facts about Diabetes*
  • Diabetes is a debilitating disease when your body either cannot produce enough insulin or cannot use the insulin it makes properly (insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas). Consistent high blood glucose levels leave a person at risk for many associated complications including kidney disease, neuropathy possibly leading to amputation, eye disease that can result in blindness, skin and dental problems, stroke, gastrointestinal problems, and cardiovascular diseases.
  • In Canada:
    • 2.2 million people have type 2 diabetes
    • Approximately 1.1 million have diabetes and are undiagnosed
    • Approximately 2.2 million have pre-diabetes
  • There is a growing incidence of type 2 diabetes in children
    • An American child born in 2000 stands a one in three chance of being diagnosed with diabetes in his or her lifetime
  • Populations considered high-risk include people of Hispanic, Asian, South Asian, or African descent
  • Aboriginal people are three to five times more likely than the general Canadian population to develop type 2 diabetes.
  • Risk of diabetes increases with a family history of diabetes and if you are over 40 years old.
  • The obese and overweight are at a higher risk of developing diabetes.
